With the elimination of inpatient diabetic educators, Linda Pierce, care manager, has gone above and beyond to help not only the nurses but MOST importantly our newly diagnosed diabetic patients. Linda made education packets regarding diabetes AND has several new glucometer machines available that we can literally hand to our patient (instead a gift card to Walgreens for the patient to purchase on their own). She has intervened and removed some key barriers for our patients. They now have consistent teaching material which includes contact information for Lutheran's Diabetes Center along with the glucometer. Internal Medicine currently has these packets and I believe Linda is working on getting this streamlined and on each unit. Linda should be recognized for taking such an important job upon herself to promote the health and wellbeing of diabetic patients.
