Lindsay is the kind of nurse I strive to be. If she is not giving 125% of herself to her patients she feels like she is not being the best nurse she can be. Lindsay is always willing to help all team members and to step up and teach new nurses and nursing students. Lindsay always brings the focus of care back to the patient. What does the patient need? What does the patient want? What could be done to improve their patient care?
This is exemplified through two stories (there are many more). The first is about a patient who had terribly tangled knots in her hair. We are a Surgical Cardiac Unit and untangling hair is not high on the priority list. This patient had an extended stay in the ICU and was now medically stable and Lindsay could start to focus on those aspects of patient care like untangling knots. None of the soaps and lotions we had in stock would work to untangle. Her hair was very important to her so cutting it was not an option. Lindsay thought outside the box and acquired a few ounces of olive oil from the kitchen. Several applications of the oil and lots of careful teasing with a comb and she and her CNA were able to release all of the knots. The patient was glowing with happiness to finally have clean hair.
Another story is about a patient in her care who was showing symptoms of being too sleepy, but the source was unknown. This patient had been an emergent operation and transfer to our unit from the ICU. Lindsay dove through the patient's chart and history and uncovered that a medication ordered was at too high of dose from what the patient had been on previously. Lindsay works well with all members of the patient care team and brought this discrepancy to the attention of the physician and once the issue was remedied the patient was able to start participating in their care.
Lindsay brings the unique combination of care and clinical expertise to her patients and they are better for her care. She is always willing to listen and offer advice to fellow nurses if they are struggling or having a bad moment or day. Lindsay is a true DAISY Nurse.
