As the clinic manager for RT 4 Children's Specialties, which encompasses pediatric rheumatology, I consider it an absolute pleasure to work with Lindsay Pemberton. I can depend on Lindsay to provide expert nursing care to her rheumatology patients in clinic and over the phone, be a resource to the physicians with whom she works, and problem solve independently using excellent nursing judgment.
While her nursing partner has been out on maternity leave Lindsay has handled her department with grace and leadership. She has staffed clinic, managed phone calls, responded to myChart messages, independently addressed patient concerns, and handled scheduling- all in a single bound. She has thoroughly completed the work of two RNs with a smile on her face and a helpful attitude. Lindsay's work is "super-human" on a daily basis. She does not leave for the day without assuring that all urgent issues have been dealt with and the needs of families have been addressed. She completes mounds of paperwork to assist patients in receiving prior authorizations for the many expensive medications used in rheumatology, she works with pharmacy to help patients receive financial assistance for these expensive meds, and she jumps through hoops to obtain medical records from other organizations so that we can provide safe and thorough care. Her patients are her priority and this is evident in the frequency with which she is mentioned by name on our patient satisfaction surveys.
I have the opportunity to round on rheumatology patients during their visits. When asked who it is they would like to recognize, the patients and families frequently respond "Lindsay". Today I asked a family what it is they appreciate about Lindsay, the parents and patient were eager to respond. This particular family has known Lindsay for five years; they know her from when she was a nurse at Dr. R's Columbia practice. In listing out the many little things that Lindsay does they shared that she is ALWAYS nice, smiling, complimenting how good the patient looks, and in a great mood. The Mom also shared that Lindsay returns phone calls within 30 minutes and how important that is to her. Mom stated that Lindsay is incredibly helpful on the phone and involves Dr. R when she needs to, sometimes Lindsay just calls out of the blue to check on the patient, and that if blood work comes back "funny" Lindsay will call them right away and direct them regarding a plan of care.
Recently, this family drove from Columbia for an appointment, only to learn that their Medicaid had been switched to an out-of-network carrier. Mom and Dad expressed to me how much they appreciated that Lindsay took care of them as if they were being seen for a visit that day. She answered their questions to meet their needs and gave them direction on how to get the Medicaid switched. When she could have sent them away to solve the problem on their own; Lindsay took them to our Medicaid worker, gave them contact information and phone numbers, and even offered to send any required information if needed. The problem was resolved quickly and the patient was scheduled for a follow-up appointment the very next month. This patient and her family see Lindsay as "the best nurse on earth" because of the care and compassion that she displays on a daily basis.
Nurses have a great healing power and "with great power comes great responsibility" (Spider Man). Lindsay accepts that responsibility in a professional manner meeting and exceeding the expectations of her peers, physician partners, and patients on a daily basis. She does all of this in a quiet manner without any expectation for special recognition.
