In these trying times, our EDs are being stretched thin with all kinds of chief complaints, backlogs of patients awaiting admission, transfer, and interventions before they can leave. The overall length of stays in an ER is longer than ever. What makes a great ER nurse is their ability to connect to their patients quickly all while reacting, fixing, and shipping, so this extended time with patients has been hard on all of them. All nurses should be honored during times like these- THEY ARE TOUGH. This being said, today I walked through the ER to round and assist with simple tasks. What I witnessed threw me back in a way that I have never experienced in my 11 years as a nurse in this facility. I saw a young boy about the age of 8 years old and he was glowing. This kid was so happy that it instantly warmed my heart. Now, kids are rarely calm in an ER- let alone radiating with joy. I asked what had happened. This young boy had been in our ER for some time for a behavioral health complaint. The staff was very responsible in not providing information on the patient, but what I know is this- Lindsey went above and beyond for this little guy. Knowing how hard it is for an adult to be cooped up, let alone an energetic little boy, she ensured that this child had boots and safe protection from the cold. She, with others assisting in observation, took the child outside for fresh air. They went to see the ducks, they threw snowballs and they played. When the boy returned, he had a brand new set of Legos to play with. Many nurses bring warm blankets, treat the body, and comfort patients. What I witnessed today was something special. The nurse treated the patient's spirit and brought some sunlight to a tough situation. A heart that big deserves a DAISY Award.
