On a very busy morning, Lindsey Fredette had to care for a difficult elderly patient who had been hospitalized on our unit for quite some time. The patient was planned for a cardiac cath. Over a period of several days, the patient had expressed multiple times that he did not want to have the procedure done and did not understand. He voiced that he was tired of being sick and had made many comments about forgoing non-essential treatment. Lindsey expressed her concerns first thing at the morning huddle and notified the MD that the patient did not have an adequate understanding of the procedure and had voiced multiple times he did not want to have it done. She did not feel comfortable signing the consent with a patient who continued to express such confusion and apprehension. Lindsey went above and beyond to advocate for her patient. The patient's concerns were finally heard and addressed; without the determined attitude and warm personality of this new nurse, this would not have been possible!
