Lionel Patterson, long time Heart Center nurse, exemplified all the valued characteristics of UMC employees. He immediately formed a welcoming atmosphere when my husband came for a heart cath. This was my husband's first care for any heart problem and our first time in Lubbock or at UMC. Lionel immediately set us at ease information of what was going to happen prior to the procedure and later about what the results meant. Lionel's compassion extended to personal conversations about tractors with my husband and nursing with me. When an ICU bed was not available, Lionel continued for the next 12 hours to guard for respiratory and circulatory needs, vitals monitoring, pain management, nutrition and most important, patient comfort. Despite a very long 15 hours, Lionel still took time at 8 pm to exhibit his commitment by personally transferring my husband to ICCU and making sure they were ready to continue care. Lionel is the best nurse my husband has had for over 12 surgeries in numerous hospitals. We are very pleased with both Lionel and UMC's care at this juncture in my husband's healthcare.
