I have been fortunate to have Lisa as my preceptor during my orientation to the Community Health Outreach Program. During one of our home visits we encountered a young man diagnosed at the age of 12 with Type II Diabetes. He was hospitalized with hyperglycemia/diabetic ketoacidosis. At the home we met a very withdrawn introverted young man who would not make eye contact and gave one word responses. Lisa assessed the situation and tailored her teaching to it. She got on the living room floor on her knees using the ottoman as a table so that she could make eye contact with him. She did not speak to him like a child, but was upfront, engaging and knowledgeable. I watched him open up and respond to her. Her follow up calls to him proved that she gave him the knowledge and tools he needed to manage his diabetes more confidently and effectively. It was a fantastic example of compassionate nursing and what a difference we can make. I am lucky to be part of a team who exemplifies nursing excellence every day.
