Lisa went out of her way to make a patient in the Emergency Department comfortable recently. This patient was severely mentally handicapped and scared to death of being in the ER. She already had one traumatic IV attempt with many nurses in the room. Lisa came in the room, talked to the patient like an old friend, gave her a hug, and created a makeshift weighted blanket out of saline and a pillowcase to decrease the patient's stress. Lisa attempted another IV attempt while speaking calmly to the patient and distracting her. The amount of compassion Lisa showed this woman, who, by the way, was so scared she was screaming and trying to bite, was absolutely overwhelming. Lisa was a great role model for all nurses in the room, including the student who was watching. Thank you, Lisa, for your compassion, ingenuity, and dedication.
