Lisa was completing an obstetrics clinical rotation. Her mother and baby family whom she had cared for early in the morning were discharged. Lisa could have sat down and worked on her clinical assignment, but she took the initiative to find her instructor. An Amish patient had just arrived to the unit to which the instructor was attending. Lisa asked if she could assist and the instructor agreed. She showed compassion for the patient's culture by carefully taking her bonnet, dress, and pins and placing them in a safe place. She assisted the patient to the hospital bed, and then assisted her instructor to find fetal heart tones. Unfortunately, no fetal heart tones could be heard and the physician came in and confirmed. The student did not waiver. She stood silently maintaining her composure and holding the hand of the patient. Anything that her instructor needed, she left the room to obtain. She was appropriate and assisted the patient and her husband with any needs that they had. Lisa stayed 1 hour 15 minutes past her originally scheduled time to assist her instructor in caring for the patient. The patient delivered her stillborn baby and Lisa remained with the patient and her husband to ensure they had anything they needed. She assisted her instructor to clean up the patient after delivery and provided nutrition to both the patient and the husband. She was the perfect addition to our team of supportive healthcare members.
