Lisa’s compassion, patience, empathy, and kindness calmed the patient down and the patient was able to go back to sleep.
Lisa faced a high-stress, complicated situation. The patient woke up confused, combative, disoriented, and adamant she was being discharged. Lisa’s compassion, patience, empathy, and kindness calmed the patient down and the patient was able to go back to sleep. Lisa spent over 45 mins with the patient. She knew she could not hear and found another way to communicate with her. She learned over time that she loves to watch sports because she can’t hear but with sports, she knows what is going on. Lisa got on the patient's level instead of standing over her to talk. Lisa knew exactly how the patient likes her ostomy bag emptied. Lisa de-escalated the situation calmly and efficiently. Lisa built trust and rapport with this patient in just under 8 hrs. Lisa exemplifies every trait Florence Nightingale wanted and looked for nurses to become.
