She sat beside me in a procedure room (even though she didn't need to be there since there were other nurses in the room) before I was put under anesthesia because she knew I was nervous and needed support from a familiar face. She was always kind and compassionate and worked hard to make sure I always received the best care and fought for me even when I wasn't in the room. She always asked about how my sport was going and would tell me about her daughters, who played for the same league. She kept in touch and made sure I was getting cared for even when I wasn't having appointments in her department anymore - She would always find time to answer me and my family's questions and was happy to arrange a phone or Zoom call. She helped coordinate my care between departments at SickKids, even though she worked for a specific department, and she fought to make sure my doctors would talk to each other about my treatments. She made sure I was always involved in decisions regarding my care - Lisa fought to get me a referral to a program at another hospital because she knew it was important, and when she received pushback from a doctor who didn't want to send the referral, she didn't give up. This program changed my life and helped me gain skills that I desperately needed to handle my health conditions. This would never have been possible without Lisa going the extra mile to fight for my care. I have had many nurses and nurse practitioners during my time at SickKids and other hospitals, and while every single one has been amazing, Lisa went above and beyond for years to make me and my family feel valued and supported. I wasn't ever just a patient to Lisa; I was a whole person, and she made sure I knew she cared about me and not just my medical conditions/treatments. I would have never received the care I did without her advocacy, kindness, and compassion, and I can't think of anyone who deserves this award more than Lisa DAlessandro.
