It's been nearly two years since my husband was treated in the cardiology unit at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. When I reflect back on those extremely difficult days, there is one caregiver who still stands out to me today - Lisa Keller.
My husband, R, was in the cardiac unit after coding in the ED. His situation was complicated by a host of health issues. Lisa was kind and compassionate like all the staff, but she just seemed to have an added confidence in what she was doing. When I first saw him in the room with all the machines and medicines hooked up to him, I was very scared. There were so many specialists coming to see him - sometimes giving me conflicting information. Lisa was the one I felt I could go to ask questions and get a realistic and honest answer.
The thing that made me so happy was when I came into the room the second day to find R clean shaven. And even though he was unconscious, it gave me great peace to be able to touch his face and feel soft skin where rough stubble had grown. He immediately looked so much better! When I commented on it, the other nurses joked that Lisa loved to shave the patients and whenever they had one who needed a shave, they asked her to do it. It was such a simple gesture, but it meant the world to me.
