I was a patient of Lisa M. I do not have her last name, but she cared for me.
I had robotic prostate surgery by Dr V. I had waited 4 months for this surgery and had a catheter for all 4 months, so I was very anxious to get this surgery completed successfully. I had several issues over the summer related to my catheter - UTIs and blood clots. It was a hard summer!
After my surgery, I had to wait over 3 hours for a room, and I was frustrated when I arrived about 8:30 PM on the 4th floor - but Lisa was a super star! She immediately made me comfortable and assessed my post op condition. She showed compassion and attention to all my concerns and questions, and she had a great sense of humor. She showed very obvious clinical expertise.
She discussed all my medications that were ordered overnight - and whether I wanted her to wake me up when they were due. She checked on my internal bleeding at my request because in recovery the nurse noticed the internal bleeding was spreading a bit. Lisa checked on that about 5 times overnight - without me even reminding her - and told me it was not spreading - easing my mind.
She was kind and courteous to me when dispensing medications, and she was always on time in dispensing them. She also gave me suggestions to help control my pain. I was on continuous bladder irrigation, and she stayed on top of the fluids overnight - quietly appearing and disappearing numerous times to change the bags.
She refilled my water several times overnight without me even having to ask. Every time she came in, she asked if I needed anything else.
She also shared a little personal information about her family, which helped me to get to know her a little better.
I feel as though overnight shift nurses may be overlooked for these types of award nominations because patients are sleeping most of the shift in many cases and unaware when they are receiving skillful, compassionate care.
Lisa is very deserving of the DAISY Award, and I highly recommend her for consideration.
