Lisa took a call from a patient calling about his "partner" who was having urinary symptoms and Lisa offered to speak to her about her symptoms. Lisa's intuition immediately sensed the situation was not safe for the patient, noticing the patient sounded much younger than the stated and age and the patient was having symptoms consistent with sexual abuse.
After spending almost an hour trying to get the patient and caller to go to urgent care for her symptoms, Lisa used nursing judgment to explain the long-term effects and importance to get seen because she strongly suspected a sexual abuse situation. When the call ended, she worked with leadership to address the legal aspect of the concern. She demonstrated going above and beyond and critical thinking by taking notice of the caller and details realizing discrepancies in the information.
