I especially appreciated how Lisa always used non-judgmental language when talking about my grandson’s withdrawal symptoms.
I would like to acknowledge Lisa, who was one of the amazing day shift pediatric nurses who took care of my grandson after he was released from the NICU. My daughter delivered him during an emergency c-section while sick with COVID. The first day I met Lisa was also the same day that I met my new grandson and the same day the CICU nurse allowed me to visit my daughter after she had become sick with Covid. I fully understand the implications of that decision. Instead of just giving me directions to the CICU, she personally escorted me there. She also made sure that pictures of my grandson were posted in my daughter's room so that when she woke up, which she did a couple of weeks later, one of the first things she saw were pictures of her new baby. I especially appreciated how Lisa always used non-judgmental language when talking about my grandson’s withdrawal symptoms (my daughter, clean for 3 years was on the maintenance drug, Subutex). Other nurses, while teaching others, referred to my grandson as the one going through withdrawal and left it at that, creating space for those trainees to see my daughter as a person still in active addiction. She worked very hard for those 3 years to maintain her sobriety, and Lisa's word choices of "mom was doing the right thing to protect her baby" or "mom was on maintenance drugs" sent a much clearer picture of who my daughter is and her choices as a mother. It's simple things like the personal escort, the cute photos of baby for a very sick mom, and the word choices that convey healthy efforts vs poor choices that show her kindness and compassion for those she cares for. My family and I are so grateful for Lisa and all her efforts to support us through a very difficult time.
