Lisa was getting her patient ready to go to the OR for surgery. Lisa is a very thorough nurse with exceptional critical thinking skills. After completing her assessment of her patient and asking thorough questions, Lisa noted that her patient experienced temporary paralysis when she woke up from her last surgery.
This was documented on the patient's e-preop, however, it was written very small and the OR and anesthesia team were unaware that this patient has a pseudocholinesterase deficiency which means precautions and communication to the anesthesia team must happen in order to prevent the patient from receiving certain anesthesia drugs to prevent this. Lisa was there with her second pair of eyes that prevented a possible reoccurrence.
