I brought my 14-year-old son into the ED for a shoulder injury after a snowboarding accident. While in the waiting room, my son's father was confrontational and verbally abusive with him. Lisa took action and placed us in the Comfort Room, called security, and helped escort my son's father out. She took a lot of yelling and swearing from him.
Once we were placed in a room, Lisa pulled up a chair and held my hand. Lisa was super busy but somehow knew that's what I needed. Immediate tears ran down my face. She just knew the pain I felt as a mother to have to go through all of this. Lisa had so many kind words of concern and love. She also knew the last thing I wanted to do was update the father when he called so she took the call for us.
The best piece of it all and the most impactful thing from Lisa was her conversation with my scared and angry teenager. She sat and had a heart to heart with him about breaking the cycle of abuse. She told him she knows that it must not be easy at home with his dad, and his dad was probably abused too (which he was). Lisa touched my son's heartstrings in a way I've never seen. He cried tears of relief, fear, and guilt but with the hope of change.
We are so thankful Lisa walked into our lives that day. It was a difficult experience, but I can't even imagine what it would have been without her.
