Lisa Rappa-Mannion was recently involved with the care of a critically ill young patient in ICU with a diagnosis of Stage IV cancer and sepsis. Aside from meeting the patient’s basic physiological needs, Lisa calmly provided concrete information to the patient and family to help and guide them through the anguishing process of making end-of-life decisions. She never lost site of the patient’s comfort needs and advocated strongly for appropriate pain control to meet those needs. She obtained the proper consults to ensure that the goal of the patient’s comfort was a top priority. Lisa has served as a consistent source of support for this patient and family and represents very well what nursing and the DAISY Foundation are all about.
