An actively dying man - basically unresponsive - was a patient on our floor. I often observed Lisa giving him consistent, excellent care. She would talk to him explaining her actions prior to giving mouth care and repositioning. This patient had only one family member, a brother, who was having a difficult time dealing with his brother's imminent death. When this brother visited, Lisa always showed kindness, sympathy and support. When the patient did die, we were at shift change. Lisa notified the brother of the death; she then clocked out and waited ont eh unit for the brother to arrive. She sat with him at the brother's bedside offering sympathy and comfort until he was composed, had said his good byes and was ready to leave for home.
This display fo caring is found in Lisa every day. She is focused on her patient's needs and the needs of her fellow staff. Her consistent caring is appreciated by patients, family members, coworkers and physicians. Lisa has had opportunities to move into management positions but she chooses to remain at the bedside giving care to the sick.
