Lisa Temple displays a mirror image of the JPS mission, vision, and values. The best way I could describe her is that she has the biggest heart for every patient she comes into contact with. Whether they are a high-profile patient, a combative inmate, or a lonely homeless patient, she treats them as if they are a family member. She truly cares for our community and every member of it that crosses her path. Her leadership on the unit is evident, especially when it comes to advocating for a patient and their family.
A deceased former patient's family member wrote a letter to our unit that provides an example of how this nurse treats every individual with love and compassion. This patient was a homeless Vietnam Veteran who hadn't seen his children in years. This is what his daughter said in the letter regarding this Lisa's care,
"She bathed him, shaved his face for him, kept his hair brushed, and changed the sheets and blankets frequently so that we watched him go from looking homeless to looking like our dad again."

Lisa is one of the most compassionate people I know. She is never too busy to sit down and comfort a patient or their hurting family member. I have witnessed her go searching for extra pillows (these are hard to come by in our unit) and blankets so that the family member will be more comfortable staying at the bedside overnight. She has a natural ability to bond with family members, and is often requested by the family to take care of their loved one over and over again.
One specific example of this was with a teenage girl who was involved in a very serious (eventually fatal) car accident. She not only provided the most attentive, patient-centered care for the patient, but she also was genuinely invested in emotionally supporting the girl's mother. She stayed late multiple mornings talking with her and explaining everything that was going on with her daughter. I believe she even attended the girl's funeral in support of her family. It is clear that Lisa is committed to providing excellent, patient-centered care. Lisa Temple deserves this DAISY Award!
