I am a kidney doctor caring for a 63-year-old patient who has had a number of setbacks during his hospitalization. Nurse Liyah went above and beyond in caring for this gentleman with a serious bloodstream infection. Her attention to detail, coordination across multiple teams, and commitment to her patients were on full display. The patient has a number of medical conditions and is normally on dialysis (but not getting dialysis because of the infection). As a result, there was an important anti-seizure medication with unclear dosing instructions because he was not getting dialysis. Liyah contacted the nephrology team, primary team resident, and attending and pharmacist all to coordinate to ensure that this patient was getting the correct medication at the correct time to prevent a seizure. She was professional to the highest degree, as she coordinated across our teams to get the correct answer for our patient. I think it is very important to acknowledge these seemingly small but critically important moments where one team member is clearly going above and beyond her assigned task to make sure that the patient is not only well cared for but safe (and preventing adverse events). I believe she is more than deserving of the DAISY Award for showing exceptional commitment to patient care even when no one else was looking.
