I was on my second night after having surgery to remove cancer from my kidney. I was uncomfortable, and my mind was wrapped around this new change in my life. Suddenly, in popped my night nurse, Liz, and immediately, I knew I was in for a wonderful night. Liz entered the room with a huge smile and introduced herself and the new nurse she was training. A small person with a big presence is how I describe Liz. She was busy, precepting someone and zipping in and out to do things for her other patients, but you would never have known she had more patients than just me. Every time she came in, she was smiling and talking with her trainee. I was impressed by how Liz explained everything to her preceptor and me at the same time while delivering care that was professional, caring, and comforting. She balanced everything so effortlessly that I could not believe it. Watching Liz was like watching a well-orchestrated ballet. I managed to get some sleep, walk the halls with Liz, and feel so much better the next day I went home. Liz taught me what I needed to know and taught her trainee all night long. Liz truly is a role model to be emulated. Her new grad will no doubt be an excellent nurse, because she was trained by one of the best. Thank you, Liz - you made my stay outstanding!
