Liz got word of this and planned a celebration for this patient and his mom when they were here. She made a meal for everyone, decorated the room, and made it into a party.
Liz is well known by all of our patients for her welcoming and friendly demeanor. Her computer is positioned in a way that when a patient enters the department, she usually knows their name and can greet them as they walk down the hall to the treatment area. Liz has a memory for birthdays, special events in patients' lives, family members, and friends. She can chat with them about what is happening in their homes and outside lives while she cares for them, or if they are assigned to another nurse, she makes a point to stop in and check on the patient when they are here.

One specific patient triggered a piece of each of our hearts. He was young and very ill when he first came to us and went through an extremely hard treatment regimen with his fair share of difficulties. We all grew to care for him and his family and saw them very frequently over the months that he was being treated. This particular patient happened to have immigrated to the US as a teenager and lived here since then. He shared with us one day that he hadn't seen his mother since he left home about 20 years ago and that she was flying up to the States and that he would get to see her for the first time in decades. His plan was to bring her with him when he was coming for treatment. Liz got word of this and planned a celebration for this patient and his mom when they were here (this happened to be on Cinco de Mayo). She made a meal for everyone, decorated the room, and made it into a party. The patient was extremely grateful for all that Liz had set up for them and thanked her numerous times.

We had the chance to meet his mom on a few separate occasions as he was finishing his treatment (thankfully much improved at that point!) Liz really went out of her way to make sure that he had the best experience. She does this on a daily basis with so many little things, and this is just one example of the BIG things that she does regularly for both her patients and her coworkers. We appreciate her so much!
