I do not think that I have ever – in my many years – walked down a hospital hallway and had an employee voluntarily make eye contact with me, much less ask how I was.
Liz Regan made a very positive difference to me when I recently visited Holy Cross Germantown. As I walked down the 4th floor hall, a nurse working at her mobile station not only made eye contact with me, but we exchanged a few pleasant words. I do not think that I have ever – in my many years – walked down a hospital hallway and had an employee voluntarily make eye contact with me, much less ask how I was. I understand that nurses are so very busy, and it can be a gamble to acknowledge someone. I also experienced what a difference it meant to me when Liz took that gamble.

I was at Holy Cross to say goodbye to a dear friend whose transfer to hospice had been cancelled because she was not expected to live through that day. She had been unresponsive since the previous night. When I got to her room, her door was closed and there was no one nearby I could ask if I could go in. I knew there was a kind nurse at the other end of the hall and returned to speak with Liz. I told her why I was there and asked about the closed door. She compassionately walked back with me and checked that I could go in. I so appreciated her actions and my time with my friend. As I left and she inquired how I was, I checked her nametag, “Liz.” Thank you to all at Holy Cross for your work and a special thank you to Liz Regan.
