Liz has been a significant contributor to not only the Herma Heart Center, but the Cardiac Electrophysiology (EP) program's growth. She has had numerous contributions which have left her imprint on the program.
Liz created information packets for the EP patients with arrhythmia conditions, ensuring that the patient and their family leave clinic with updated "drugs to avoid" lists, information sheets specific to management of arrhythmia, action plans for the child's school, and information on medical identification bracelets, a must for patients with pacemakers and implanted defibrillators.
Liz is a great resource for the other nurses in the HHC when it comes to arrhythmia issues, ordering genetic testing, and much more. She is a welcome sight for patients and a comforting, understanding voice to families after bad news has been given to them. She's become an electrophysiology expert over the years and has learned a lot about how to manage and triage issues related to arrhythmias and implanted devices.
Liz has always stepped up when more has been asked of her and been a tremendous team player. A good example of this would be when one of our nurse practitioners left. Everyone saw more work but Liz was the only one of us who accepted a new role by learning how to interrogate pacemakers and implanted defibrillators. In addition, Liz is on our advisory board for Project ADAM, a program supporting prevention of sudden cardiac death, where her role includes organizing volunteer efforts in the "Youth Advocate Program" for teenagers.
Liz is unique in our group in that she's taken things much further. She started a fundraiser for the HHC 6 years ago called "Skate with Heart". Skate with Heart has grown over the years and raised funds ($25,000 at 2016 event) for research and program support at the HHC. The work that goes into a fundraiser like this is amazing and she does it all on her own time. Liz was and still is, the organizational force behind the event. Her vision is to grow the event and provide a fund, similar to the MACC fund, for cardiac care.
Liz is an excellent nurse and we were fortunate to recruit her 15 years ago to the HHC. She's devoted to patient care and has been integral in the growth of the cardiac EP program. She's an excellent representative and role model of what is great about CHW nursing, and a superb candidate for a DAISY Award.
