She stayed by my side, gave pain medications, and massaged my legs, which not only greatly helped my pain but also made me feel genuinely cared for.
It is an honor and a privilege to nominate Lizzet C — an incredible ICU nurse and human being who consistently went above and beyond to support me medically and psychologically — for a DAISY Award. She embodies everything it means to be a DAISY Award Nurse. Throughout my many years as a hospital patient, my time working as a CNA at a large hospital, and my one and a half years as a volunteer at HUMC, I have met more nurses than I can count. I can confidently say that Lizzet is one of the very best, most special, and most memorable of them all.
She has a rare combination of extensive medical knowledge and experience, empathy, compassion, and love. Lizzet was always there at a moment’s notice, never getting upset or annoyed, no matter how many times I pressed the call button. I remember having excruciating leg pain from not being able to move my legs due to the ECMO device. Lizzet did everything she could, and more! She stayed by my side, gave pain medications, and massaged my legs, which not only greatly helped my pain but also made me feel genuinely cared for. She also held my hand and listened to me and provided the exact reassurance/advice I needed to hear as I cried over a bad encounter with a psychiatrist, providing me with more comfort and psychological help than the psychiatrist themselves, which was profoundly powerful in a vulnerable moment. These are just a few out of the multitude of examples I could give to demonstrate the kind of nurse and person Lizzet is. I have never had a nurse go above and beyond and display such a greater passion for their work.
In the words of Lizzet herself, “there are people who do their jobs because they have to and those who do them because they love it.” Lizzet exemplifies, through her work and actions, that she loves her job and her patients. Therefore, I believe there is no nurse more deserving of a DAISY Award than Lizzet, and I hereby gladly nominate her for a DAISY Award! Lizzet, if you are reading this, thank you for everything! I will always remember you and what you did for me. It gives me comfort and confidence in humanity that there are people like you out there. You helped make the ICU immensely more comfortable and less traumatic an experience. It was a privilege to have you as my nurse!
