Logan’s actions embody the very heart of the DAISY Award. He combined skill with kindness, turning an ordinary moment into something profoundly healing.
We recently admitted a patient who had just been diagnosed with cancer, who wore a long beard and hair. Over the past several days, he hadn’t smiled, spoken much, or shown interest in engaging with anyone. You could feel the weight of his diagnosis in the silence around him. Logan took the time to do something extraordinary. He gave the patient a Cadillac bath, a clean shave, and then helped him shave his head – transforming what could have been a difficult moment into one filled with dignity and care.
Logan shared that he cuts his brother's hair on the side, and he brought the same care and skill into this patient’s room. He didn’t just perform a task— he recreated the experience of being at a barber shop, giving the patient a sense of normalcy, comfort, and humanity. When I later went to check on the patient, the change was remarkable! He was smiling from ear to ear, talking freely, and glowing in a way we had not seen since his admission. He told me he had not been to a barber in 30 years, but today he looked like he had. The patient’s joy and spark were a direct result of Logan’s compassion and thoughtfulness. Logan’s actions embody the very heart of the DAISY Award. He combined skill with kindness, turning an ordinary moment into something profoundly healing. The compassion not only changed the patient’s outlook but also reminded all of us that nursing is about more than procedures – it is about restoring dignity, creating connection, and lifting the human spirit. It is an absolute honor to work alongside Logan.
