I first met Lora at the New Mom's class after my first son was born. I had no family support in town and as a new mom I felt scared and overwhelmed. Right away Lora welcomed me with open arms. She is professional with the class, but has that warm, welcoming, and caring side to her that lets moms open up about issues they have. It's her smile, her words, her actions, and her caring emotions that not only show she cares but she can relate to us. Below are just some of the ways that Lora helped me as a patient and new mom:
She helped to show me different ways to breastfeed my child. She provided many resources on how to help increase my supply. She never gave up. And when the time came to stop all together, Lora supported the decision. She never made me feel like a failure for not breastfeeding longer. I have seen her give that same support in class to others.
She is a cheerleader for new moms. I remember her saying that it was great that we got ourselves out of the house, and she was right.
She opens herself up to the New Mom's group to share stories about herself or new ideas to try. These stories and ideas are areas we all can relate to. She would hold my baby so that I could use the bathroom without bringing the baby, car seat, and the diaper bag with me. As a new mom - and mom in general - how often do we get to use the bathroom uninterrupted?
During the class, she would hold my son if he got fussy. This allowed me to focus on the topic or the speaker. Numerous times I would see her walk around the room and hold the babies - even if for 5 minutes - it was a break.
Many times as I looked up at her with tears in my eyes, I remember that she gently touched my shoulder and told me I was doing a great job. She was that support, that gentle touch I needed so badly. Lora Harris has made an impact on my life that I truly don't think I will ever be able to repay her. She deserves the DAISY Award.
