Today my mom had to go to the Infusion center for an Iron Infusion. She is 79 and recently had a heart attack. Prior to the heart attack, she was walking 5 miles a day, took no medications, and saw her family doctor one time a year. Her world has been turned upside down. She is now extremely anemic, short of breath, and very scared. Yesterday she saw Dr. "N," and today, she was in your infusion center. I called to check on her after the visit today, and this is her story: "You cannot imagine how a nurse made me feel today. I have been so anxious, feel poorly all the time, and just want to quit taking all my medicines until I met Loretta today. She was incredible. She made such a difference in my day and my feelings about the next few weeks. She got me set up for my infusion, and we started to chat. Loretta was the first person to listen to my story since I had my heart attack. She let me tell her about my heart attack and how I was feeling. She then told me her story, which was somewhat similar. She empathized with my fear, my anxiety, and how I felt terrible because of all the medicines. She said all those medicines are tough, but it gets better. She explained all about the medicines and what they did. She took the time to really listen and also to give me hope that I would feel better. This was the first time since the heart attack that anyone listened to me or cared, and the first time I had any hope things would get better. I know now my feelings are normal, and I will feel better and get back to walking. Loretta is an incredible nurse and deserves to be recognized for her compassion, empathy, and ability to really hear the heart of her patients." As a daughter and a nurse, I could not be more proud to work in a place that made my mom feel this wonderful – As a third-generation nurse – I could not be more honored to know a nurse at TidalHealth, one of my peers who cared for my mom. My mom would like to nominate Loretta for a DAISY Award for her incredible compassion and care today.
