Lori K Coulson, LPN

I was with my husband K for a follow-up appointment with his doctor at Mayo Clinic Ellsworth. My husband had a heart attack and I truly thought I could lose him. Previously, I had a heart attack and open-heart surgery. The Doctor walked in and made a joke about if we were competing (having heart attacks). Unfortunately, I didn't say anything to that. I just started to cry and told my husband I had to go. I proceeded to head to the waiting room crying. I saw nurse Lori and I just broke down crying. It was out of frustration, fear, and everything that had just happened. She took me into an empty room and just let me vent and cry. I told her how scared and fresh everything was, I told her how mad I was at the doctor’s comments. She gave me numbers I could call if I wanted to voice my concerns but most importantly, she gave me a shoulder to cry on and her compassion and her skills.

I told Lori I had not been taking my anxiety medication or seeing my counselor in a long time because of things that had happened in the health system. I explained to her I didn't feel like any of the doctors would be there if something happened with my medication again, so I just quit. She gently reminded me how important it was that I take care of myself and my mental health. She reminded me I need to be well to help myself as well as my husband. Lori was a godsend that day; I was breaking mentally, and she helped me by just giving me her time and her ear.

Within a day or two of that visit, I called and made an appointment with my counselor. I really don't think I would have ever done that without her gentle voice pushing me that day. Lori is a rare nurse these days. She took and gave time when she didn't have to. I truly believe she cares about her health facility as much as she cares for each of the patients and their families. She made an incredible difference in my life!
