It is always interesting to see how a team works and how all individuals come together to do the amazing things that they do. When employees are asked in rounding "who on your team CONSISTENTLY demonstrates our Core Values", Lori's name is mentioned time after time. Qualities such as patient advocate, consistent, helpful, available, and my favorite: 'She's the nurse that you want to take care of your family'.
Recently, Lori was assigned to a gentleman originally from another country. He was able to speak some English but she had the Martii available to help her. Preoperatively the patient was anxious and confided to Lori about some of the persecution that he had endured. He told her how he had fled his country and came to America to be safe. Unfortunately, he also told her how he continued to have fears for himself and his family. The patient was at the hospital alone. Lori offered reassurance and the patient went to surgery without incident.
Postoperatively, the patient was very hypertensive and very anxious. He was scared and was sure something bad was happening. Lori noted that he was having weakness in his leg. She appropriately called a BRRT (Bryan Rapid Response Team). As with any BRRT, a lot of people showed up and filled the room. This only added to the patient's anxiety and fear. I watched Lori in her calm voice continue to tell him he was OK and that he was safe. Her patience and compassion were amazing. It was obvious to anyone who was in the room that this patient had found trust in Lori and she was really the only one that could help to calm him. Lori stayed by his side as several doctors came to help and stayed late this day as she wanted to make sure that this patient was OK before turning him over to one of her peers. I am so proud of her and what she was able to do for this patient. We are so grateful to have her on our team. Lori truly showed me what exceptional looks like and is a true DAISY Nurse.
