Today a very pleasant older man came walking into my office. He was walking with a cane and holding a box. He steps into my office to see if I am the manager of the unit down the hall. I said no, but I could help him. He said that he was here to return some money to a nurse that saved the day. He said that he did not have any money and he did not know how he could get out of the parking deck without money. His wife had a stroke and he had hurried here to the hospital and did not think about money. Only upon leaving did he realize that he did not have any money. He said that a nurse named "Lori" not only gave him the money he would need to get out of the parking deck, but she also gave him enough money for him to stay the night since it was getting late. He said this nurse saved the day. He handed me a box and said, "I am returning her money and if it is ok, I would like to give her this box of candy?"
I am so proud to work with nurses who are still able to give from their heart. Yes, the money was very helpful, I am sure, but this nurse demonstrated to this husband that she cared above and beyond her duties.
