Thanks to Lori’s initiative and persistence, she succeeded in connecting the couple. In this moment of profound sorrow, Lori’s determination allowed the patient and her husband to be together in spirit, even when physically apart.
A patient experiencing fetal loss at 20 weeks of gestation was without her support person, as her husband was currently in Basic Training with the U.S. Military, where communication is severely restricted. Due to this, he was unable to be present or offer emotional support during this difficult time. Lori, nurse and fellow service member (ARMY RESERVES) recognized the emotional gravity of the situation. With the patient's consent, she utilized her military connections to find a way for the patient and her husband to communicate. Thanks to Lori’s initiative and persistence, she succeeded in connecting the couple. In this moment of profound sorrow, Lori’s determination allowed the patient and her husband to be together in spirit, even when physically apart. As a former service member myself, I can only imagine how much this meant to the family. Lori’s compassion, dedication, and resourcefulness were truly remarkable.

Lori also serves as a volunteer photographer for "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep," providing comfort to families experiencing perinatal loss. She regularly goes above and beyond in her support of this vulnerable patient population. Lori’s communication is consistently soothing, thoughtful, and empathetic, helping those in the darkest moments feel a sense of safety and comfort. What many may shy away from, Lori approaches with grace and warmth. She ensures that the experience of these families is not defined by trauma, but by peace and healing. In her limited time with patients, Lori creates an atmosphere that allows for acceptance and recovery.

Lori cared for this patient during a 12-hour overnight shift, leaving at 7 a.m. After supporting the patient through her labor, managing her pain, and ensuring her comfort, the patient delivered shortly after Lori's departure. However, with the patient's consent and by request, Lori came back at 1pm (after just a few short hours of sleep) in her volunteer capacity to take photos. These photos will be treasured forever, as the patient’s husband never had the chance to meet their son. Lori not only provided exceptional care in the moment, but she also gave this couple the invaluable gift of memories that will last a lifetime. She embodies the core values of Highland and inspires everyone around her. It is an honor to work alongside someone who represents the best of our team.
