A husband was at Grand View Health dealing with multiple medical issues. His wife was in the hospital at the same time, receiving care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Not only did Lori Roadcap, a staff nurse, take outstanding care of the husband, but she also helped write another chapter of their love story. For showing such compassion, Lori is the latest winner of our DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Lori was nominated by a grateful family member, who tells the story:

“Lori took care of my father. She was beyond patient and comforting and went over and above… Unfortunately, my mom was also in the hospital at the same time in the ICU, and my parents hadn’t seen or spoken to each other in over a week.

The day my dad was getting transferred to rehab, Lori brought in shaving items from her home and a shampoo cap. She gave Dad a hot shave and shampoo to get him all cleaned up for his “date” in the ICU with my mom. Then she stayed to feed both of them lunch together in the ICU while I spoke with my brother over lunch about the situation and our options.

I have never met a nurse who invested in giving two people another moment in their ‘love story’ of 57 years together. We will be forever grateful for Lori’s efforts to make it happen. Having my parents treated at Grand View has been an amazing experience. All the staff, doctors, and nurses were incredible, but Lori left a permanent mark on our hearts.”
