An 81-year-old patient was admitted to Med/Surg with cellulitis of both legs due to years of no-compliance with medical recommendations. This patient has a history of threating behavior (verbal, non-verbal, and physical) and leaving AMA resulting in an official hospital threat alert. At the most recent admission, the patient came with one of the worst cases of maggots staff had seen. The family, though engaged, were no longer able to continue care. The infection was so bad there was talk of amputation as a remedy. Lori took immediate control of medical care including numerous dressing changes so effective the patient never needed isolation. Her efficient and effective work set the stage for her colleagues to provide a continuation of care. Coupled with medical care and her bedside manner, the patient's temperament even balanced. Though we remained on threat alert, there were no incidents as in times past. Due to Lori's leadership and incredible skill, the patient was medically cleared for discharge, referred to 62 facilities, and one accepted ensuring that they could provide him with immediate wound care and long-term supportive living arrangement. During a family meeting, the patient commended Lori for her care (which according to the family was probably the first compliment uttered in a long time). The patient left BCCH "excited" and "with a big smile", as reported by the House SR Manager. Thanks to Lori, the patient stayed only 9 days at BCCH. Her hard work and dedication, as well as professionalism, represented BCCH in the true DAISY fashion.
