I apologized profusely to Lorin for waking him and explained the urgency of the situation. Without any questions or comments, Lorin stated he would be right there.
Early in the program, I arrived at a residence one morning to find Lorin playing his ukulele and singing. Both the patient and wife told me how much they looked forward to Lorin's arrival daily to serenade them while administering the IV medication. I know now that Lorin plays his music for many of our patients, but he never draws attention to himself or the activity. It is merely one of those special things he does for his people.
We had a patient who was an extremely difficult IV start, allowing only one attempt. I called Lorin at home, knowing he would be asleep. I apologized profusely to Lorin for waking him and explained the urgency of the situation. Without any questions or comments, Lorin stated he would be right there. Lorin met me at the residence with a smile and determination to get the job done. When we walked into the residence, the patient and family greeted Lorin with a big smile, obviously relieved by his presence. Lorin spoke in such a special, caring way to the patient while preparing his equipment. I later found out that Lorin had cared for this patient earlier during the stay. The patient commented that once she saw Lorin, she knew everything would be well. She openly allowed him to draw labs and initiate the IV. Lorin truly exemplifies a DAISY Nurse by putting the needs of the patient first, while maintaining such a personal touch and enhancing the human art of nursing. He earns the utmost respect from his peers as well as his superiors for the high standards he lives by.
