Lorraine is the band 7 ward manager on J7, which has been a COVID ward since April 2020. She has faced many many challenges at this time for her and her team. I have not worked with this team before, but have rotated on J7 on and off over the last 8 weeks. Just this week alone Lorraine has faced huge challenges with every day needing to self-isolate more of her staff due to an outbreak of positive cases among staff. She has faced sending 1-2 nurses and CSWs home for shift after shift, yet has still been truly focused on compassionate care. For example, ensuring we do everything to track down the missing teeth of one patient and arranging the detail of a complex palliative discharge for another. She does all this when faced with a total bombardment of other things at the same time (sending staff home, sick patients, welcoming transient staff) PLUS managing a ward of very complex patients. At times it has felt Lorraine is the "only team member left", and she has just calmly cracked on and supported those around her. She also is needing to self-isolate to protect her family members and has done this week after week for her ward and her patients. At other times the ward has had a very very high mortality rate and she ensures her team cares for the patients as if they were their relatives, this is emotionally hard because of the volume of patients. I have been amazed at the standard of nursing and CSW care on this ward, and at times of immense challenge, they have been as compassionate and caring and calm as ever due to Lorraine's leadership. Many of her team members have also been quite unwell which is an additional worry, yet Lorraine always finds time to check in on them. She never complains and just quietly gets on with providing fantastic care for her patients and team. She deserves recognition for the challenges she has supported her team through.
