The kindness and compassion she demonstrated was warm and genuine.
My son D is 14 years old and has severe autism. D is non-verbal and was recently diagnosed with epilepsy and required an MRI under a general anaesthetic. Unfortunately, D does not cope very well with hospital admissions and the whole process is extremely distressing for him. D had his MRI in December and Lory was our nurse during our long stay in second stage recovery before being discharged home. I would like to nominate Lory for the absolutely outstanding and intuitive care that she provided to both D and to myself (a very difficult combination of a challenging paediatric patient with a nurse for a parent!). Lory’s sensitivity, her unflappable politeness, and her ‘don’t stress, I’ll get it done’ attitude in every aspect of the care she provided was an enormous comfort to me on what was a very long and difficult day. D’s admission involved him needing a code black, and he also had severe ongoing nausea and vomiting, which culminated with him vomiting all over the wheelchair and the floor of the K block foyer as we were discharging! At the same time, Lory was also caring for a very vocal prisoner accompanied by multiple guards in a nearby area, as well as multiple other patients. I am so, so, grateful that Lory was our nurse that evening. The kindness and compassion she demonstrated was warm and genuine. She made us feel like nothing was too difficult despite obviously being very busy for the entire shift and despite D generating a lot of additional workload by vomiting in his bed four times! Lory was 100% unflustered no matter what happened and did not once make us feel like a burden. She was friendly, cheerful, and helpful, and her obvious high level of knowledge and overall competence inspired a lot of confidence in me as a parent. I can only hope that all patients at the RHH receive the same level of attention and care as we did from Lory. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
