Louise was nominated by her manager, who shared a letter from the grandparents of an infant, who had this to say about how she is was deserving of this award:
"In October, my granddaughter was hospitalized on your unit. It was a very difficult time for our family and she continues to be hospitalized at your hospital, though not currently in the ICU. We spent most of the days with our granddaughter as she continued to recuperate and had the pleasure of working alongside the staff.
Not only is Louise an excellent nurse, but she possesses the ability to look at the "whole patient". She observed our granddaughter on many occasions and soon got to know her not only as a patient but as an individual was able to pick up on many cues she gave (frustration vs. pain, restlessness vs. boredom). Louise was comforting to our family and it was heartwarming to watch as she hugged our grandbaby as if she were her own. On Halloween, she made a beautiful quilt which we put on top of our granddaughter. My daughter on Halloween remembered the owl costume she had purchased for her daughter prior to her illness that she would not be wearing that day. When she walked into the room and saw the quilt, tears came to her eyes when she saw her covered in the quilt. Her daughter was celebrating Halloween because of Louise.
As a whole family, we are so grateful for the care everyone gave our granddaughter, our most precious treasure. My family thanks everyone who came into our lives to care for our granddaughter. May God continue to bless each and every one of his workers and helpers at Doernbecher Children's Hospital."
