While working with Luann on Lifespring unit, I had the opportunity to observe her interaction with a patient diagnosed with depression and PTSD. He was medically retired, disabled young man seriously wounded by IED. Luann was empathetic, compassionate, although always maintaining a profession demeanor. She was ever so calm and patient which dealing with episodes of frustration and angry outbursts. She went out of her way to give individualized care and extra attention while also caring for her other assigned patients. She was an effective and involved advocate on his behalf and went out of her way to lift his spirits and offer realistic encouragement. His initial hostility seemed to melt away and he was much more accepting of the course of treatment presented to him. She went above and beyond in her treatment of this damaged young hero.
