Luanne Payne, RN made a deep connection with her patient over the past week and they love each other. Today, the patient signed the hospice paperwork and is tearful and anxious about her life and impending death. Luanne was present with Melody from Physical Therapy when they saw how much the patient was responding to Luanne humming music to her. Melody went to Walmart and purchased a CD player/radio for the patient. They turned gospel music on and the patient's anxiety was decreased and she was comforted by the music. When I (the Unit Manager) walked in, two of our nursing students were holding the patient's hands as the music played. Luanne stated that the music soothed her and that thanks to Melody, the CD/Radio will go home with the patient so she can continue to be comforted. Luanne made a point of connecting with the patient and providing above and beyond care.
