Lucas provided my family with our own sense of solace and comfort in knowing the person we loved more than anything was in good hands.
I work as a nurse practitioner in palliative care, and months ago, I found myself on the other side of my profession – as the family member of a dying patient in the hospital I work in. It has taken me months to sort through my feelings regarding the loss of my sweet, funny, and loving grandmother, but this remained so important to share.
As my family and I have reflected back on her care during the last few days of her life, we cannot remember her lab values, or the medications offered, even the conversations held with physicians aren’t clear after time has passed. But one thing each one of my family members remembers with such clarity is that an absolute angel took care of my grandmother while she was admitted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. My family and I first met Lucas when he arrived for his night shift to care for my grandmother. We were instantly put at ease by his compassionate nature towards not only my grandmother but us as a family. We still remember the softness of his voice as he spoke to her, the gentleness in which he maintained her comfort and dignity, and his kindness in ensuring we felt partnered in her care plan.
Months later, we still talk about how appreciative we were that he was willing to listen and collaborate on a plan to ensure she was at peace. Lucas provided my family with our own sense of solace and comfort in knowing the person we loved more than anything was in good hands. I think all nurses have the most beautiful souls, but I count myself especially blessed to work alongside a nurse like Lucas. I can only imagine the difference he makes in patients’ lives, given the impact he had on myself and my family in one shift. Thank you, Lucas. My family is more grateful for you than I could ever explain.
