Lucie Lubin is a remarkable RN with the biggest heart you'll ever encounter in a profession where having a big heart is such a large part of the equation. Lucie had a young woman recently who came in after vomiting for 3 days after huffing cleaning agents. She also had a burned throat and was disoriented with a rapid heart rate. Lucie took report, introduced herself and the young woman would not make eye contact. Lucie set her up and went to meet her other patients for her shift. Lucie returned later and discovered that this young woman also had self-inflicted burn marks on her arms and chest. Lucie inquired with the young woman how she had got those wounds but she would not reply. Lucie didn't push. Lucie returned later to give her meds and noticed she was in distress. Her blood pressure was high, and she said she had chest pains. Lucie knew this could be caused by anxiety but didn't take anything for granted and called the doctor. Lucie reassured the young woman she wasn't there to judge her, just to help her which would be a common refrain. Lucie told her, "If you're under 35 years old, I could be your Mama," and assured her she would take care of her. Lucie noticed that the young woman was beginning to trust her. Lucie did an EKG and vitals again while waiting for the Doctor along with a blood draw and Lucie noticed her levels were significantly high, checked her electrolytes. She adjusted the IV plan based on her knowledge of what the young woman needed and did not want to cause her more pain. Lucie arranged for wound care as the woman's levels improved. Lucie attempted to get the young woman to walk with her but she still declined. Lucie pulled up a chair, held her hand, and told her, "I'm not here to judge you. I'm going to treat you like you are one of my kids." Lucie then asked if she wanted to talk, and the young woman declined, so Lucie asked if she would listen, and she nodded. Lucie told her that her life was precious and each life has a purpose and to not let anyone tell her she is not beautiful because she is and to look inside because happiness comes from within. She told her she had to love herself first. The young woman started to cry and did not want to let go of Lucie's hand. Lucie helped her clean up, got new linens, new sheets, but she was still very weak and unable to walk as she hadn't eaten for days as her throat was still in so much pain. Lucie had ENT check out her throat to see how significant the burning was. She discovered the young woman did better with thicker powders -so she had her liquids changed to thick - did puddings and other foods like that. Lucie was off a day, and when she returned, she was no longer assigned the young woman. She still though managed to find her way over to her to check on her and make sure she was getting out of bed and walking to regain her strength. The woman's improvement was remarkable from where she'd been a few days before. Lucie's attention to detail, hard work - she did all of this while providing great care to 5-6 other patients- and huge heart make her an excellent candidate for the DAISY Award. She regularly works 50 - 60 hour work weeks and as Lucie says, "I'm not just a travel nurse. I am a nurse. I've always wanted to be a nurse since I was 7 years old because someone took care of me and I was pleased with it and always knew what I wanted to do." The DAISY Award was created for nurses just like Lucie who make the world a kinder, warmer place one patient at a time.
