I am writing to nominate Lucienne Flerijean for the DAISY Award for the extraordinary, compassionate care she provided during the first three days following my husband's heart and kidney transplants. These were the most critical and painful days of a 100-plus-day journey, and Lucienne was the steady hand we both needed. Clinical Excellence and Patient Advocacy: The complexity of my husband's recovery cannot be overstated. He returned from two major surgeries connected to a vast array of lines, tubes, and machines. Lucienne managed this high-stakes environment with meticulous care, ensuring every piece of equipment functioned perfectly. However, her care went far beyond technical skill.
She spoke directly to him, explaining every procedure and adjustment as it happened. This transparency provided him with a sense of agency and calm during a time of immense physical and emotional vulnerability. Promoting Well-being and Resilience. One of the most profound aspects of Lucienne’s care was her commitment to our family’s long-term resilience. As his primary advocate, I was exhausted. Lucienne recognized this and provided me with “permission" and assurance I needed to take breaks and care for myself.
By ensuring he was in the best possible hands, she allowed me to recharge so I could stay strong for the rest of this long journey. This is a perfect example of family-centered care that promotes the well-being of everyone in the room. Igniting this compassionate care, Lucienne displayed patience and a gentle spirit throughout the three consecutive days of supporting his complex needs. In an ICU environment where tasks can become routine, she never lost sight of the human being in bed.
Her presence reminded us why nurses are the heart of the healthcare system. We are deeply grateful for her. Lucienne didn’t just monitor vitals; she nurtured his spirit and protected our family’s hope during our most difficult hours.
