Ms. Lucy Depriest is a textbook example of lifetime achievement in Nursing. Ms. Lucy has been dedicated to providing the absolute best patient care at the VA since she began working here as an RN 41 years ago! Lucy began her career in nursing as an LPN and has continuously pursued education to further her practice ever since. She furthered her education from an ADN to a BSN in 1978. Lucy has attended countless classes and seminars to better her practice and has eagerly come back to the ward ready to tell everyone else what she has learned. Lucy is truly an expert in her practice from all her years of experience in several specialties and different roles.
I cannot even begin to describe the amount of dedication and passion it takes to devote all those years to serving others and upholding the nursing profession to the highest of standards. Lucy has shown her passion for educating and mentoring nurses throughout her years. Lucy says that her favorite thing about her job is the patients, but she really loves being a mentor and having students. One of the best pleasures I have had during my career at TVHS is watching and learning from Lucy. Lucy takes every opportunity to educate others and she has always been there for me when I had questions. She was always eager to jump in when I needed help when I first started at TVHS and she has shaped me into the nurse I am today.
One of Lucy's favorite things is reading nursing journals- she calls them her "nighttime reading". She frequently finds journals for other nurses, and I knew when Lucy gave me my first article, I was officially a part of 2G. I know I am not the only one who is a better nurse from watching and learning from her. Lucy has seen so much change in nursing through the years and it is fascinating to even just hear a glimpse of what she has experienced. Lucy's legacy and passion will always live on through all the nurses who have learned from her.
Not only does her compassion for her career show through her mentoring, but Lucy also leaves an impression on every Veteran she cares for. Lucy diligently advocates for her patients to make sure all their needs are met. Lucy performs her nursing care with a smile on her face, bringing joy to patients who need it the most. Lucy thoroughly and happily completes her nursing duties with the amount of detail, compassion, and expertise that can only come from 41 years of experience.
Many Veterans remember Lucy and often ask about her. One example that comes to mind is we had a patient who was readmitted from complications of his surgery. The patient was frustrated and afraid to be readmitted. He had been short with other staff and seemed withdrawn and upset. The Veteran lit up when he learned Lucy would be back tonight. He said, "Lucy just feels like family". I can't think of a better way to describe Lucy. Just like a part of a family, Lucy has been there to keep us motivated and is always around when we are down. Lucy has become a legacy at TVHS and we are absolutely blessed and honored to work with her.
Note: This is Lucy's 2nd DAISY honor!
