Lucy is described as the “salt of the earth”. Her passion for patient care and doing what is “right” for our patients is evident in her daily practice. Lucy has great attention to detail which is present in her daily practice. She is an exemplary compassionate patient advocate! Recently ATA had a patient that while elderly was alert and oriented. She had a physician order to receive blood. The patient refused. Lucy discussed the rationale for the blood and the patient still refused which made Lucy very uncomfortable as she did not want to give the blood without patient consent. She contacted the next of kin who was agreeable to the patient receiving the blood. Lucy spoke with the physician and requested that the physician speak with the patient about the blood. As a result the physician came to ATA and spoke with patient reinforcing the need for the blood transfusion. Lucy demonstrated respect for this patient’s dignity and patient rights. She was a strong patient advocate that resulted in the patient being informed about the physician order and rationale for blood infusion. She exceeds Daisy Criteria in regards to going Above and Beyond; Being Persistent; Paying Attention to Detail, Strong Communication Skills and Great Professionalism in her daily practice!
