If my loved one was in that situation I would want someone like Lucy to be the one there fighting in their corner.
I want to nominate my coworker Lucy from CTICU. We have had a patient on our unit in bed 10 for quite some time. Lucy has cared for her multiple shifts in a row, which is no small feat as this patient requires a lot of critical care tasks and attention.
One of the days I witnessed the sheer compassion and love for this patient from Lucy, she took the time out of her already busy day to fully wash her hair, brush it, and braid it. The entire time she sat with her and talked to her like she was her best friend. The patient was very depressed being she was an active person prior to her admission and was tearful throughout the day. Lucy determined that she just didn't want to be left alone, so aside from needing to leave to complete her other tasks for her patients, she pulled a mobile computer into her room and just sat with her while charting.
The second time I witnessed this amazing care was when she was told by the physician that in order for this patient to be considered for a lifesaving lung transplant she needed to be mobile. So what did Lucy do, helped this patient stand up 3 times while the whole unit cheered for her.
I think that this obvious love and compassion from Lucy needs to be awarded because if my loved one was in that situation I would want someone like Lucy to be the one there fighting in their corner. Lucy is the reason this patient has made such amazing progress and therefore I think she will be the reason this patient makes a recovery.
