Lucy cared for more than me, she cared for my family.
I delivered my son G. My son had major kidney issues and underdeveloped lungs which led us to deliver at Texas Children's Hospital. We wanted our son to have the best possible chance of survival; despite the NICU team's best efforts, our sweet boy passed away after fourteen hours. The night my son was born he was taken straight to the NICU, and I was taken to my room to recover from my C-section. I had COVID and was not able to go see him. I was scared, terrified. My nurse Lucy gave me comfort, she talked with me, and she cried with me, she showed me so much compassion and kindness. She offered to call into the NICU to get updates on G for me and if the NICU team called me in my room, she would ask how he was doing.

I admired her and how she did more than just what she needed to do, she cared for me on a different level. Lucy saw a hurting, scared mother whose baby’s outcome was likely not going to be good, and she did everything she could to comfort me. She cared when she didn’t have to. She was genuine, and that is commendable. Lucy always came into my room with a smile. She was in my room frequently checking on me, mentally and physically.

When I was resting, I would still see her pop in, but she would not disturb me. She was constantly making sure I was comfortable and assessing my pain level often. She even covered my sleeping husband, who did not feel well, with warm blankets. Lucy cared for more than me, she cared for my family. Again something she didn't have to do but she did. I am a labor delivery nurse in Victoria Texas, and I have worked in other areas of my hospital, and I can tell you that nurses like Lucy are few and far between. Empathy comes naturally to Lucy.

There is a difference between taking care of patients versus “caring” for your patients. Nurses like Lucy love what they do and love their patients, and that makes all the difference especially for mothers like myself who are in devastating situations. Lucy has a kind soul and a heart of gold. God sent me several angels to walk with me through my storm and Lucy was one of them. I will never forget her and all her kindness.
