It is my pleasure to recommend Lucy Spano for the DAISY Award. Lucy is a registered nurse for the Clinical Resource Team. She is an outstanding nurse and co-worker. She loves her job and the patients. During the Covid crisis that UPMC Western Maryland experienced, Lucy volunteered to work with Covid patients whenever she was scheduled, often acting as charge nurse and picking up extra shifts. She will put others' needs ahead of her own. Recently, she took care of a patient through their final days, and we received an email regarding how grateful the family was: "I wanted to pass along to you and the nursing leadership team what a wonderful job all the nurses that cared for my Grandmother over the past week did for her and my family. In particular, I want to note the job that Lucy Spano did. For 4 days, Lucy was the primary nurse caring for my Grandmother during the day. She was attentive, kind, and compassionate. She personifies everything that is good about our nursing staff. As I shared with Charity earlier, I have always been very proud to represent UPMC WM and be part of the team. I was very proud of the job Lucy did. I was even more proud of the fact that the care my Grandmother received from Lucy and others had nothing to do with me. It is how we care for all our patients. Lucy is a testament to UPMC, UPMC WM, and the entire nursing profession. While Lucy was caring for my Grandmother and her other patients, Lucy was also dealing with some personal losses of her own, most recently her Grandmother. However, this never stopped her from giving 110% to her patients. I am honored to have Lucy as a member of the Clinical Resource Team at UPMC WM, as her professionalism and dedication are a great example of the care we strive to provide."
