November 2023 Honoree
Luis Maldonado Aceves, RN
I have been in the hospital for over a month, struggling with being stuck here away from my family and pets. I have been super emotional on top of not feeling good. I got Luis as my day nurse -- I had not met or had him before. He came into my room with a smile. We went over how my night was and how he could best help me today. He was so caring and compassionate. He checked on me a lot, and if he saw I was a little down, he would take extra time in my room, making me laugh and doing his best to cheer me up.
During every interaction we had, I could see and feel his passionate love for being a nurse. He went above and beyond to do whatever he could to help. We talked a lot and got to know each other. I truly felt like a friend and not just another patient. He shared with me that he is a new nurse and was worried about making sure he was doing the best he could for each of his patients. If he hadn't told me he was new to nursing, I would have never known. He is such an amazing nurse -- it just came to him naturally. For me, the two days I had him, he always made me laugh and smile and made being in the hospital a lot more bearable. I am so grateful and blessed to have him as a nurse! He was one of my favorite nurses I have ever had! Mayo is so lucky to have him as a nurse and should be so proud to have him on the care team! He represents the "Mayo way" perfectly!
